This section explains the principles for approving external qualifications and also gives guidance on qualifications for pre-16-year-olds and for 16 to 18-year-olds.

Some qualifications have automatic approval. These are:

• Up to and including Key Stage 4, any external qualification where the associated course is provided wholly outside school hours.
• All qualifications offered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
• Any qualification, from which approval has now been withdrawn, provided the learner taking the associated course has previously been entered for the exam or assessment and the course is only to enable them to re-sit.
