DCSF: Changes in reporting of National Curriculum Assessments at Key Stage 2 in England 2010: Introduction of science sampling
In May 2009 the Government accepted in full the recommendations of the Expert Group on Assessment, a group comprising head teachers and assessment experts. The group recommended that, while Key Stage 2 science tests had played an important role in supporting improvements in teaching and learning, they should now be discontinued. From 2010, Key stage 2 science at school level will therefore be assessed by teacher assessment only, which takes greater account of pupils' practical grasp of the subject and is based on their attainment throughout the academic year across the full programme of study. The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families announced that, in order to monitor national standards in science, a new externally marked, sample test would be introduced. The Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) will administer the test in May 2010. The proportion of students attaining level 4 or above and level 5 in this sample test will be reported in a Statistical Release to be published on this website in the summer.

Further information on the technical and methodological details of the science sampling arrangements can be found here.

DCSF: GCSE Attainment by Pupil Characteristics, in England 2008/09
This Statistical First Release was released on 15 December 2009. The figures for 2008/09 are provisional. The figures for 2007/08 were updated on 18 January.

We have identified an apparent error in our systems. This error appears to affect mainly special schools and the impact is mainly but not exclusively on the statistics for pupils with statements of special educational needs. Until we have properly assessed the error including the impact on the statistics and the revisions needed, we have removed the statistical release. We expect to revise the statistical release by the end of February. We will announce the date of release through a notice on this website.

DCSF: Local Authority Measures for National Indicators supported by the Tellus4 Survey 2009-10
Publication of the statistical release: Local Authority measures for National Indicators supported by the Tellus4 Survey has been delayed from 04 February 2010 to 09:30 on Thursday 11 February 2010. This is so we can reweight the Tellus3 data using the Tellus4 methodology and apply an adjustment to take account of the change in age of the children and young people participating in the survey due to moving it back from the summer to the autumn term. The Tellus4 statistical release will provide recalculated Tellus3 NI performance measures to allow better comparability between Tellus4 and Tellus3. Full details of the changes made to the methodology and age adjustments applied will be provided in the statistical release published on 11 February 2010.

DCSF: Statistical First Release on GCE/VCE A/AS and Equivalent Attainment by Pupil Characteristics in Schools in England 2008/09 (Provisional)
This SFR contains statistics on attainment linked to pupil characteristics including ethnic group, first language, Special Educational Need (SEN) and free school meal eligibility, for school sixth forms only. It was scheduled for release next month, in February. The responsible statistician is reviewing the coverage (school sixth forms only) and has delayed the release pending completion of this review, including consideration of any comments received on the relevance and coverage of this release. If you have any comments on this SFR then please let us know. You can contact us at this e-mail address. The outcome of the review and the revised release date will be announced on this website at least four weeks prior to the release.

DCSF: User Consultation of Statistical Publications
DCSF aims to make its statistics relevant and useful. To meet these aims the Department is carrying out user consultations to review a number of statistical publications. Further details on how users can contribute to specific reviews, including a list of publications under review, or comment more generally on the whole publication portfolio can be found here.

DCSF: GCSE and equivalent results 2008/09 - number of schools below 30% floor target for 5+A*-C GCSE (or equivalents) including English and maths
On 22 September 2009, DCSF published a press release explaining a predicted fall in 2008/09 in the number of secondary schools remaining below the minimum standard of at least 30 per cent of pupils gaining 5+A*-C grades at GCSE (or equivalent) including English and maths. This announcement explains the source of those figures and when National Statistics will be available.
