Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £910 per pupil in real terms to West Sussex Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 31 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 3704 in 1997 to 534 by January 2005.
  • 970 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 1700 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 65 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 73 per cent from 62 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 79 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 75 per cent in mathematics in West Sussex LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in West Sussex LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 52 per cent in 1998 to 56 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 14400 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
