Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1020 per pupil in real terms to Somerset Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 37 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 4887 in 1997 to 563 by January 2005.
  • 490 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 1070 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 74 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 67 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 72 per cent from 63 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 74 per cent in mathematics in Somerset LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Somerset LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 51 per cent in 1998 to 56 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 9100 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
