Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1060 per pupil in real terms to Isle of Wight Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 35 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 751 in 1997 to 185 by January 2005.
  • 310 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 470 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 68 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 61 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 67 per cent from 59 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 76 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 69 per cent in mathematics in Isle of Wight LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Isle of Wight LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 40 per cent in 1998 to 45 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 2400 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
