Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1040 per pupil in real terms to Southend-on-Sea Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 34 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 1411 in 1999 to 31 by January 2005.
  • 420 MORE teaching assistants than in 1999
  • 520 MORE support staff than in 1999
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 74 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 59 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 71 per cent from 59 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 76 per cent in mathematics in Southend-on-Sea LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Southend-on-Sea LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 48 per cent in 1998 to 61 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 3400 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
