Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £880 per pupil in real terms to Torbay Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 30 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 758 in 1999 to 0 by January 2005.
  • 140 MORE teaching assistants than in 1999
  • 380 MORE support staff than in 1999
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 76 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 57 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 73 per cent from 58 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 73 per cent in mathematics in Torbay LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Torbay LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 48 per cent in 1998 to 53 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 2300 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
