Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1000 per pupil in real terms to Plymouth Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 34 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 1116 in 1999 to 124 by January 2005.
  • 430 MORE teaching assistants than in 1999
  • 710 MORE support staff than in 1999
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 72 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 59 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 71 per cent from 58 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 75 per cent in mathematics in Plymouth LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Plymouth LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 44 per cent in 1998 to 54 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 4700 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
