Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1420 per pupil in real terms to Reading Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 47 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 674 in 1999 to 62 by January 2005.
  • 120 MORE teaching assistants than in 1999
  • 220 MORE support staff than in 1999
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 72 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 56 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 65 per cent from 52 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 76 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 72 per cent in mathematics in Reading LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Reading LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 43 per cent in 1998 to 46 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 3100 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
