Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1150 per pupil in real terms to Southampton Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 38 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 2236 in 1998 to 0 by January 2005.
  • 300 MORE teaching assistants than in 1998
  • 400 MORE support staff than in 1998
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 66 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 51 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 64 per cent from 52 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 74 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 71 per cent in mathematics in Southampton LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Southampton LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 41 per cent in 1998 to 47 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 4300 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
