Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1090 per pupil in real terms to Portsmouth Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 36 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 1734 in 1998 to 0 by January 2005.
  • 500 MORE teaching assistants than in 1998
  • 620 MORE support staff than in 1998
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 68 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 55 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 69 per cent from 52 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 75 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 68 per cent in mathematics in Portsmouth LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Portsmouth LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 31 per cent in 1998 to 45 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 3700 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
