Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1050 per pupil in real terms to Brighton and Hove Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 34 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 3422 in 1998 to 31 by January 2005.
  • 250 MORE teaching assistants than in 1998
  • 610 MORE support staff than in 1998
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 75 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 55 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 70 per cent from 54 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 72 per cent in mathematics in Brighton and Hove LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Brighton and Hove LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 42 per cent in 1998 to 55 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 4700 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
