Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1240 per pupil in real terms to Barnsley Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 45 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 3220 in 1997 to 157 by January 2005.
  • 320 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 540 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 65 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 54 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 65 per cent from 56 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 73 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 70 per cent in mathematics in Barnsley LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Barnsley LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 30 per cent in 1998 to 44 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 4600 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
