Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1410 per pupil in real terms to Sandwell Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 49 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 4423 in 1997 to 125 by January 2005.
  • 390 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 1010 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 65 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 52 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 63 per cent from 46 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 72 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 66 per cent in mathematics in Sandwell LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Sandwell LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 29 per cent in 1998 to 43 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 6800 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
