Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1480 per pupil in real terms to Birmingham Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 48 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 10882 in 1997 to 155 by January 2005.
  • 1900 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 3170 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 70 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 57 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 67 per cent from 55 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 74 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 70 per cent in mathematics in Birmingham LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Birmingham LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 36 per cent in 1998 to 55 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 24200 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
