Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1420 per pupil in real terms to Newham Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 37 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 1262 in 1997 to 31 by January 2005.
  • 1020 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 1570 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 68 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 48 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 67 per cent from 47 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 75 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 72 per cent in mathematics in Newham LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Newham LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 34 per cent in 1998 to 50 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 7800 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
