Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1610 per pupil in real terms to Lewisham Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 39 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 469 in 1997 to 31 by January 2005.
  • 390 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 670 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 73 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 55 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 69 per cent from 54 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 72 per cent in mathematics in Lewisham LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Lewisham LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 33 per cent in 1998 to 47 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 5400 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
