Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1920 per pupil in real terms to Islington Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 46 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 313 in 1997 to 31 by January 2005.
  • 310 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 400 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 69 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 56 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 68 per cent from 57 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 74 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 68 per cent in mathematics in Islington LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Islington LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 23 per cent in 1998 to 43 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 4000 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
