DCSF: Key Stage 2 Attainment by Pupil Characteristics, in England 2008/09

DescriptionThis Statistical First Release (SFR) provides 2008/09 information on attainment by different pupil characteristics, specifically gender, ethnicity, eligibility for free school meals (FSM), special educational needs (SEN) and English as a first language.
  • In 2009, 71.8 percent of pupils attained the expected level in English and maths combined compared with 72.7 percent in 2008.
  • 65.2 percent of pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL) achieved the expected level in both English and mathematics; for pupils without EAL the percentage was 72.9 percent.
  • 53.3 percent of pupils known to be eligible for free school meals (FSM) achieved the expected level in both English and mathematics; for pupils who were not eligible for FSM the percentage was 75.5 percent.
  • The percentage of pupils with SEN without a statement who achieved the expected level in both English and mathematics has fallen from 34.6 percent in 2008 to 33.6 percent in 2009. The proportion of pupils with a statement who achieved the expected level in English and mathematics has fallen from 14.2 percent in 2008 to 13.2 percent in 2009.
  • 74.4% of girls reached the expected level in both English and mathematics compared with 69.3% of boys; a gap in attainment of 5.1 percentage points.
