DCSF: GCE/Applied GCE A/AS and Equivalent Examination Results in England, 2008/09 (Provisional)

DescriptionThis Statistical First Release (SFR) provides the earliest information on the overall achievements of young people in GCE and Applied GCE examinations and other equivalent qualifications. This information is based on data collated for the 2009 School and College Achievement and Attainment Tables (formerly Performance Tables) and covers achievements in all Level 3 qualifications approved under Section 96 of the Learning and Skills Act (2000). The QCDA tariff is used to calculate point scores for all Level 3 qualifications.

The 2009 achievement data presented in this SFR is currently in the process of being checked by schools and colleges. Revised figures will be published in January 2010 accounting for amendments made by schools up until the publication of the Achievement and Attainment Tables.KEY POINTS

For students aged 16-18 in schools and colleges entered for all Level 3 qualifications in 2008/09
  • The average QCDA point score per candidate entered for Level 3 qualifications in 2008/09 was 731.1, compared with 740.0 in 2007/08.
  • The average Level 3 point score per entry was 211.2, compared with 209.4 in 2007/08.
  • 94.1% of candidates achieved passes equivalent in size to at least 2 GCE/Applied GCE A levels, compared with 95.3% in 2007/08.
  • 12.5% of GCE/Applied GCE A Level candidates achieved 3 or more A grades at A Level, compared with 12.1% in 2007/08.
