The latest national statistics on Key Stage 1 produced by the Department for Children, Schools and Families were released on 28th August 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics AuthorityUK Statistics Authority

DCSF: National Curriculum Assessments at Key Stage 1 in England, 2008 (Provisional)

DescriptionThis Statistical First Release (SFR) provides provisional information on the achievements of eligible pupils (typically 7 year olds) in the 2008 National Curriculum assessments at Key Stage 1 (KS1).

The Key Stage 1 statistics published in this SFR are produced from data provided to the Department by local authorities in August 2008. The figures in this SFR are based on this provisional 2008 data.

The key points from the latest release are:
    At Level 2 or above:
  • In all subjects a higher proportion of girls than boys reached or exceeded the expected level.
  • Compared to the equivalent final 2007 figures, the overall percentages achieving Level 2 or above remained the same in all subjects.


    • At Level 2B or above:
  • As for Level 2 or above, in all subjects a higher proportion of girls than boys achieved Level 2B or above.
  • Compared to the equivalent final 2007 figures, the overall percentage achieving Level 2B or above remained the same in reading and mathematics but in writing there was a fall of 1 percentage point.


    • At Level 3 or above:
  • A higher proportion of girls than boys achieved Level 3 or above in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing, whilst a higher proportion of boys than girls achieved Level 3 or above in Mathematics and Science.
  • Compared to the equivalent final 2007 figures, the overall percentages achieving Level 3 or above dropped by 1 percentage point in all subjects.
