The latest national statistics on Admission Appeals produced by the Department for Children, Schools and Families were released on 22nd May 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics AuthorityUK Statistics Authority

DCSF: Admission Appeals for Maintained Primary and Secondary Schools in England, 2006/2007

DescriptionThis SFR covers statistics on appeals lodged against non-admission of children to schools in 2006/07 and on appeals heard about their outcome for England and by Local Authority.

The latest statistics on the period 2006/07 and update those previously released on 24 May 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • For all schools, 19,450 appeals were decided in favour of the parents compared with 20,540 in the previous year; appeals decided in favour of the parents represented 34.4 per cent of appeals heard by a panel in 2006/07, a decrease of almost two percentage points since 2005/06.
  • In primary schools, 5,590 appeals were decided in favour of the parents in 2006/07 compared with 5,390 in the previous year; appeals decided in favour of the parents represented 32.2 per cent of appeals heard by a panel in 2006/07, a decrease of almost four percentage points since 2005/06.
  • For infant classes in particular, 1,590 appeals were decided in favour of the parents in 2006/07 compared with 1,330 in the previous year; appeals decided in favour of the parents represented 18.4 per cent of appeals heard by a panel in 2006/07, a decrease of just over one percentage point from the previous year.
  • In secondary schools, 13,860 appeals were decided in favour of the parents; appeals decided in favour of the parents represented 35.3 per cent of appeals heard by a panel. This represents a decrease of just over one percentage point since 2005/06.
