920090333 DCSF: Customer Voice Research - Sex and Relationships Education Published  Published

Published 05-Nov-2009
Report Publication Code : DCSF-RR175 Brief Publication Code :
This qualitative research was conducted to understand parents’ opinions on the parental right to withdraw children and young people from sex and relationship education (SRE) in Personal, Social, Health and Economic education. This included if and at what age they feel it would be appropriate for children and young people to be taught SRE in schools without the parental right to withdraw.

This wave of Customer Voice research involved eight discussion groups with parents of children and young people aged five to nineteen (four with fathers and four with mothers). In total 47 parents participated, from a range of socio-economic backgrounds. Research took place across England (rural, suburban and city locations) during October 2009.

Customer Voice Research is small scale, timely, qualitative research work, designed to explore customer views on key or emerging issues. Each month around 8 workshops take place with parents and/or young people. These take the form of discussion groups with up to 8 people, or depth interviews which are usually done in pairs.

Qualitative research does not allow for statistical analysis. All findings from this work form part of the much wider evidence base used by the Department when making policy decisions. Qualitative research is used to help the Department understand how and why people feel and think as they do. It is concerned with collecting in-depth information that ensures we are developing policies that are fit for purpose and meeting the needs of our customers, as well as communicating information in language that makes sense to parents and young people. When recruiting parents and young people to take part, consideration is given to a number of factors including gender, age, geographic location and socio-economic status, depending on the needs of the project.
