
1C:How is success in learner achievement recognised?
The following extracts from ALI and Ofsted inspection reports illustrate effective practice in learner achievement.
Adult Learning Inspectorate | OFSTEDStudents achieve individual success against appropriately challenging literacy, numeracy and communication targets that are practised in realistic practical settings. Achievement of targets is reviewed regularly. In work situations, for example the café business, students are prepared to participate effectively in the workplace and gain good numeracy skills through stock-taking and use of the till.
Students' achievements in numeracy and communication skills are good. Students develop practical numeracy skills well. They can measure effectively, using standard units or in estimating by comparison with similar objects. Students make good use of scales in the house kitchens and understand the approximate amounts needed for some simple recipes. They compile lists in preparation for shopping and many students make good progress in understanding the amount of money they will need.
There is very good achievement of communication and personal and learning skills. For example a student who on arrival at the college had severe issues about personal hygiene and behaviour is now working in the college sweet shop. He is able to serve members of the public, count out sweets into bags and add up the day's takings on a calculator.
Students make very good progress in communication and personal development. They can speak with confidence to individuals and groups and talk to unfamiliar people either with communication aids or directly.
Students are committed to their own learning and many make significant progress. Standards of work are satisfactory or good on most courses. For example, in the college restaurant, students were confidently using the till and accurately giving change to diners.
The standard of work in students’ folders and the standard of students' practical work are high. Students have produced some excellent portfolio work, which shows the development of their ideas following frequent visits to galleries and places of artistic interest. Programmes successfully develop students' basic skills. A number of courses help improve the job skills of students and prepare them for employment.
Initial assessment of students’ literacy and numeracy skills is thorough and is used in the development of individual learning plans. Teachers use the plans effectively when planning their lessons and conducting progress reviews.
