Pregnancy and the first years of life are one of the most important stages in the life cycle, when the foundations of future health and well-being are laid down, and is a time when parents are particularly receptive to learning and making changes. There is good evidence that the outcomes for both children and adults are strongly influenced by the factors that operate during pregnancy and the first years of life.

This publication sets out the recommended standard for the delivery of the Child Health Promotion Programme (CHPP) and demonstrates how the programme addresses priorities for the health and wellbeing of children - such as Public Service Agreement (PSA) indicators.

This document is a first step; further work is planned to support services in building a CHPP that is fit for the future, and that meets the needs of children and the aspirations of families.
