She said:“The Black Country Challenge Awards help to raise pupils’ aspirations and celebrate real achievements across primary and secondary schools.“Congratulations to everyone taking part. Today is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of primary and secondary school pupils through “My School in Great”, music, new media, performing arts, writing for the media, business and enterprise, and science, as well as recognising personal achievement through the ‘Star Pupils’ category.“I was appointed Minister for the Black Country Challenge in June and already I have been impressed by the dedication and desire to rise to the challenge from teachers and pupils alike. This year’s GCSE results are a great reflection of your efforts with improvements outstripping the national average and the number of pupils getting 5 A*-C grades including maths and English going up by 3.1 percentage points.” The Awards were presented by Black Country Challenge Chief Adviser Sir Geoff Hampton and sponsors. The ceremony was attended by pupils, parents and teachers from across the region and hosted by Michael Collie and Satnam Rana from BBC Midlands Today.Black Country Challenge Chief Adviser and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton, Sir Geoff Hampton said: “I am delighted that we are able to celebrate the continuing success of schools throughout the Black Country. Overall our schools have continued to improve with some spectacular results achieved by individual schools. "Today's awards acknowledge this but are focussed in particular upon some of the magnificent achievements of pupils who have contributed to this success story. Our sponsors and partners have provided some excellent prizes which I will help present at today's award ceremonies hosted by Michael Collie and Satnam Rana.”The winners of the Black Country Challenge Student Awards are: [ CLICK HERE FOR TABLES OF BLACK COUNTRY AWARDS]Editor's Notes This press notice relates to 'England' 1.
