Extension of the National Strategies Contract
07 April 2009

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has today announced its intention to extend the National Strategies contract by one year, to 31 March 2011. The value of the extension is £64 million.

The National Strategies programmes are delivered by Capita Strategic Children’s Services on behalf of the DCSF.

They are professional development programmes for early years, primary and secondary school teachers, practitioners and managers. They are one of the Government’s principal vehicles for improving the quality of learning and teaching in schools and early years settings and raising standards of attainment.

Schools Minister Jim Knight said: “The Government remains committed to raising standards for all children and the National Strategies programmes help us do that by providing resources, advice and guidance to local authorities and schools.

“We will shortly be consulting a wide range of stakeholders about how schools and Local Authorities can best be supported in their efforts to improve, as well as addressing the needs of the early years sector, taking account of the Children’s Plan and the 21 Century Schools White Paper.”

In addition to the central funding, schools and local authorities received approximately £370 million in targeted support for National Strategies related work in 2008-09. This principally funds support to schools and early years settings, and training to teachers and early years practitioners to improve their practice.
