HOW TO READ THE TABLESThe pilot tables contain information on the performance of the pilot schools, including the existing value added (VA) measures and the CVA measures for Key Stages 2-4 and 3-4. The following indicators are the same as those published in the main secondary tables: VA measures, coverage indicators, qualifications achieved, and the number of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. They have been re-published here for the pilot schools, to set the scene for their CVA measures. Special schools are listed separately at the end of the pilot tables. School Particulars The pilot tables provide the following details for each school: name, address and telephone number; type of school; specialism indicator (if applicable); admissions policy; and age range. Abbreviations and symbols are explained in the 'Abbreviations and their Meanings' section. CVA Measures and Confidence Intervals The pilot tables contain CVA measures for KS2-4 and KS3-4. CVA measures for KS1-2 and KS2-3 are still to be piloted and under current plans are due to be introduced in 2007. We base each pupil's CVA score on a comparison between their actual KS4 performance and the KS4 performance predicted for each pupil by the CVA model, having taken into account the range of factors affecting performance. The individual pupil scores are averaged to produce the school level CVA measures. This number is presented as a number based around 1000. This indicates the value the school has added on average for their pupils. Measures above 1000 represent schools where pupils on average made more progress than pupils nationally, while measures below 1000 represent schools where pupils made less progress. For KS2-4 and KS3-4 CVA, a measure of 1006 means the school's KS4 cohort has, on average, achieved one GCSE grade higher than the national average. The degree of significance that can be attached to a school's CVA measure depends, among other factors, on the number of pupils included in the calculation. The CVA methodology adjusts for the cohort size when providing a CVA measure and confidence intervals are presented beside the CVA measures to indicate the range within which we can be statistically confident the 'true' CVA measure lies, given the cohort size. Further information on calculation and interpretation of CVA measures and confidence intervals can be found in the Guide to CVA, the technical annex to this booklet. CVA Profiles The CVA profiles are calculated using data from all schools who completed a PLASC return in 2005. The profiles enable schools to see where they are placed nationally, based on their CVA measures. The band profiles shown below are provided for information only. The band into which an individual school falls will not be published in the Achievement and Attainment Tables. The tables below show the band profiles for maintained schools nationally, based on their 2005 KS2-4 and KS3-4 CVA measures.
CVA Coefficients Coefficients are calculated for each factor included in the CVA methodology and represent the contribution that each factor makes to the CVA measures. The 2005 coefficients are listed in the ready reckoners, found on the PAT website, http://www.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/performance/1316367/CVAinPAT2005/?version=1.
