HOW TO READ THE TABLES

School or college particulars

The tables provide the following details for each school and college included: name, address and telephone number; what type of school it is or whether it is a college; if a school is part of the specialist schools programme; the admissions policy of the school; whether the school or college is mainly for girls, boys or both; and the age range of the school or college. More detailed explanation is contained in the Abbreviations and their meanings section.

Background information

The tables also show the total number of students aged 16, 17 or 18 at the start of the 1999/2000 academic year who were registered at the school or college in January 2000, regardless of what they were studying, and the number of those students who were entered for 2 or more A levels or the AS/Advanced GNVQ equivalent. This information is reported in the school and college (16-18) performance tables and gives an overall picture of the size of sixth form provision at that school or college to compare with the students included in the value added calculation.

GCE A level, AS and Advanced GNVQ results

When students apply for a place in higher education, each pass grade they have at GCE A level, AS and Advanced GNVQ scores a certain number of points. The tables show the number of students aged 17 who were entered for 2 or more GCE A levels or the AS/ Advanced GNVQ equivalent and the average point score achieved by those students (providing they were entered for at least one GCSE/GNVQ by the end of their compulsory education).

Value added index

The results of this pilot exercise are published here in two separate ways. In each case a value added `index' is reported for each school and college, which is based on the value added scores of their individual students. The score for each student is the difference between their own total GCE A/AS and Advanced GNVQ point score and the median - or middle - total GCE A/AS and Advanced GNVQ point score achieved by students with the same GCSE/GNVQ results.

The first set of results published here uses the total GCSE/GNVQ point score per student as the starting point of the value added assessment; the second set uses the average GCSE/GNVQ point score per entry per student as the starting point. The students' individual scores are aggregated to give a score for the school or college, which in the pilot is represented as an index number around 100. This indicates the value the school or college has added, on average, for their students.

A technical annex for each set of results contains a table showing the points awarded to each qualification grade and a more detailed explanation of the value added calculation, and advice on interpreting the measure.

National averages

You may wish to compare the results of individual schools and colleges with the national averages also shown.

Sixth Form centres and consortia

In some areas, to pool resources and offer a wider range of post-16 courses to students, institutions co-operate together in a group known as a sixth form centre or consortium. Schools and colleges that are known to be part of a sixth form centre or consortium are identified in the tables by a symbol. Additionally, the centre or consortium will be named and its results shown separately.

Additional information

The GCE A level, AS and Advanced GNVQ results were supplied by the awarding bodies concerned in August 2000 and then checked by the schools and colleges involved in the pilot in October. Some reviews requested by schools and colleges of grades awarded were not completed in time to be included in the tables. It is, therefore, possible that, for some schools and colleges, the information published would have been different had the results of any reviews been available earlier.

In so far as it was possible, both value added calculations presented here are based on the same set of student data. There were however a small number of cases where data required for the second set of results (those using average GCSE/GNVQ point score per entry per student as the input measure) was incomplete. As a result, 18 students, who were part of the first calculation, have not been included in the second. The 11 institutions affected by this change have been notified and are identified in the second set of results by a .

A number of schools and colleges have been involved in piloting new qualifications - the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and the six unit single award Advanced GNVQ - as part of Qualifying for Success reforms. Results in these qualifications have not been included in the performance tables in 2000, nor in the value added calculations here. The way in which all results will be reported in the tables in future will be fully reviewed shortly in the light of new reforms.
