ABBREVIATIONS, DEFINITIONS AND SYMBOLS

County school
Maintained by the local education authority. LEA responsible for admissions.

Voluntary aided school
Maintained by LEA, with a (generally religious) foundation which appoints most of the governing body. Governing body generally responsible for admissions.

Voluntary controlled school
Maintained by LEA, with a foundation which appoints some (but not majority) of the governing body. LEA generally responsible for admissions.

Special agreement school
Maintained by LEA, with a foundation (generally religious) which appoints majority of governing body. Governing body generally responsible for admissions.

Grant-maintained (GM) school
Governing body responsible for admissions.

Special school
For pupils with learning difficulties, emotional and behavioural difficulties, physical or sensory disabilities. There are four types:
  • maintained by LEA;
  • grant-maintained;
  • not maintained by LEA but approved under the Education Act 1996; and
  • an independent school approved under the Education Act 1996 to take pupils with statements of special educational needs.

CTC
City Technology College/City College for the Technology of the Arts.

Independent school
Normally fee charging.

Authorised absence
Absence with permission from a teacher or other authorised representative of the school. This includes instances of absence for which a satisfactory explanation has been provided (eg illness).

Unauthorised absence
Absence without permission from a teacher or other authorised representative of the school. This includes all unexplained or unjustified absences.

LEA
Local education authority. Responsible in law for enforcing school attendance.

Day pupils of compulsory school age
Means day pupils of compulsory school age (5-16) in responding schools.

Means less than 0.05% of half days missed.
