National Summary

Revised figures for 2009 show that in maintained schools 70.0 per cent of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 achieved 5 or more GCSE and equivalents at grades A*-C up from 45.1 per cent of 15 year olds in 1997. Revised figures for 2009 show that in maintained schools 92.3 per cent of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 achieved 5 or more GCSE and equivalents at grades A*-G up from 86.4 per cent of 15 year olds in 1997.

In 2008/09 the percentage of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 achieving 5 or more A* - C grades at GCSE and equivalent including English and Mathematics was 50.9 per cent, up from 42.6 per cent in 2004/05.

In 2008/09 the number of schools where fewer than 30% of pupils achieve 5 or more A* - C grades at GCSE and equivalent including GCSEs in English and Maths was 247, down from 909 in 2004/05.

In 2008/09 the percentage of pupils achieving of 2 or more A* - C grades in Science GCSEs or equivalent was 54.2 per cent up from 45.5 per cent in 2005/06.
