Leonardo da Vinci is the European Union’s vocational training programme. It complements national strategies to increase access to training, improve its quality and encourage lifelong learning across Europe.

It aims to create a more flexible, competitive and socially inclusive European workforce by developing skills and new ideas for the delivery of training and guidance, and therefore improve employment opportunities.

Applications must be made by organisations rather than individuals, this is because the programme is designed to have an impact on institutions and training systems.

The main project types within Leonardo are:

* Mobility - enables groups to spend periods of time in another European Country for placements or exchanges.

* Pilot Projects - to design, test and validate new approaches to vocational training which can be developed as a product.

* Transnational Networks - to reinforce and develop expertise and new approaches in vocational training and guidance, and to spread these throughout Europe.

* Language Competencies - to enhance cross-cultural communication in the training/work environments.

* Reference Materials - to contribute to the growth of knowledge at Community level on systems of vocational training in participating countries.

* Joint Actions - this is a separate measure linking together the Leonardo, Socrates, Youth and Culture programmes. It supports project ideas which extend beyond the scope of a single programme.
