About the Honours System
Achievement comes in many forms, but what we are looking for is someone who has made a difference in their field of work or community - they have gone the extra mile.
Perhaps their achievement has brought distinction to British life and enhanced the UK's reputation in a particular area or activity.
Maybe they have demonstrated innovation and entrepreneurship. Or they have achieved great things against the odds.
Honours can be awarded for all sorts of work, paid or unpaid, but your nominee must still be involved in the activity for which they are nominated.
The honours system rewards merit and service to the nation. There are several different types of award, each one recognising a different type of contribution.
Anyone can receive an award if they reach the required standard of merit or service. Honours lists contain a wide variety of people from different backgrounds.
Honours lists are published twice a year; at New Year and in mid June on the date of The Queen's official birthday. Please check the latest list, the New Year 2009 Honours, to see who received an honour from the education, skills and children's services sector.
