Parenting Implementation Project (PIP)

The Parenting Implementation Project (PIP) was initiated by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) in early 2008. It concluded with a national conference held on 9 June 2009.

PIP’s central aim was to help local areas to provide effective support to parents and families. The PIP has worked with 18 local authorities over approximately twelve months to develop and implement their strategic approach to commissioning and delivering parenting and family support services.

Each local authority focused its work on two themes over the year: one around an aspect of commissioning, the other on an aspect of delivery. In all cases, work streams had been identified by local planners as priority areas for development in their area.

The PIP resource kit

This resource kit is a major output from the project and a huge achievement by the local authorities taking part. PIP has identified current practice in parenting and family support services and developed new and innovative methods for commissioning and delivery. As a result, a wide range of techniques, ideas, templates and case studies are now available for all local authorities to consider as they take forward their own priorities. The resource kit also includes contributions developed by the 18 authorities in addition to their PIP activity.

The resources contained within the following pages are not presented as the definitive answers to the issues local areas must address. Instead, it is hoped they will offer some helpful insights and prompt debate about effective approaches to address local priorities. The range of resources are organised under some of the themes identified as likely priority areas.

A booklet (the PIP Resource kit guide) introducing each of the seven PIP themes is available, and background information and all of the PIP resources produced to date can be accessed from the following ‘themed’ pages:

If you have any comments about the PIP please email us. For queries about a specific PIP resource, please contact the Local Authority directly (contact details can be found on the front page of each resource).
