Local Government's role in digital inclusion: Quick wins

There are many millions of adults affected by digital exclusion – as much by lack of motivation, skills and confidence as by lack of access. Research shows that the divide is not narrowing quickly or significantly, and that it may not be impacted on by demographic or market changes in the coming years.

The digital divide is rapidly increasing social, economic and educational disadvantage for many, and is particularly important in today’s challenging environment. It must be addressed if take-up of online public services is to reach near 100 per cent by 2014, as set out in the Smarter Government White Paper. While there are many challenges to overcome, there are also some simple and practical steps that can be taken in the short term that will have immediate and growing impact. This list of actions has been developed by the DCSF, Communities and Local Government, DC10plus, the cross-Government Digital Inclusion Team, the Digital Inclusion Advisors and Martha Lane Fox's Digital Inclusion task Force.
