Staying safe: Safer recruitment
The DCSF asked the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) to produce guidance and online training on safer recruitment. The Safer recruitment guidance applies to everyone who has a role (paid or volunteer) in an organisation working with children, and is likely to be seen by the children as a safe and trustworthy adult.
This doesn't just apply to people who are responsible for or have direct contact with children. It also encompasses those who regularly work in places such as a children’s centre or youth and community project where children are present, and whose role is a support function (e.g. administration, catering, caretaking). These people are likely to be seen as safe and trustworthy because of their regular presence in the workplace, and they may have access to personal and sensitive data relating to children.
The aim of this free guidance is to help recruiters to take all possible steps to prevent unsuitable people from working with children, and to bring in a consistent framework for the children’s workforce.
It provides advice on a range of topics including recruitment and selection, vetting and checking candidates, safer practice and managing allegations against staff. It will be particularly helpful for:
- Staff and managers in organisations working with children, particularly those responsible for recruitment and selection
- People and organisations that provide personnel or human resources advice to such organisations
- Employment agencies and businesses that provide temporary, interim and other staff to such organisations
- Non child-focused organisations that have contracts with organisations working with children
You can access both the guidance and online training via the safer recruitment section on the CWDC website.
