Boarding Provision: Partners in the programme
The Boarding Pathfinder is about partnership to harness expertise and facilities at local level between a range of professionals working to support individual children and families, and nationally between DCSF and local government, the voluntary sector, and state maintained and independent boarding schools. This page explains each partner's role and provides information on assessing options and building effective contacts when considering placing vulnerable children in boarding provision.
Educational Trusts
There are currently three Educational Trusts who participate in the Programme as partners. The trusts roles are to:
- Provide expertise in what individual boarding schools can offer
- Advise on whether a placement would suit a particular child
- Negotiate fees and co-ordinate or provide financial support (where their own funding conditions are met)
LAs, boarding schools and third sector staff are encouraged to contact them on the basis of their areas of interest and expertise as outlined below:
Royal Wanstead Children's Foundation
A 182-year-old charity which helps support at boarding school vulnerable children with one or no active parents. Currently supporting around 250 children at over 90 different independent and state maintained boarding schools throughout the UK. Produced two reports showing the impact a boarding placement can have on the life of a vulnerable child.
Frank Buttle Trust
Provides aid to individual children and young people identified as struggling in the state education system and/or experiencing other social or family problems.
Joint Educational Trust
Helps children between 7- and 13-years-old who are at risk in some way by enabling them to attend independent boarding or day schools, or state boarding schools as a means of 'making a new start'.
Participating LAs and boarding schools
Boarding schools in both the maintained and independent sectors have experience in looking after children who need to live away from home and often have a long history of helping vulnerable children with particular needs, often through their own charitable foundations. There are currently 83 participating schools and 21 local authorities as of February 2009. For more information and guidance, download the set of information resources available below.
Boarding Provision: Working-with-partners information resource

Boarding schools' associations
The Boarding Schools' Association (BSA) and State Boarding Schools' Association (SBSA) are able to offer information and support, and welcome enquiries from LAs and third sector staff who would like to find out more:
The Boarding Schools' Association (BSA) is the United Kingdom association serving and representing member boarding schools, training staff and promoting boarding education.
