This documentary provides a short overview of the day of the first national event focusing on local safeguarding children boards (LSCBs), which took place at the National Motorcycle Museum on 13 March 2007. LSCBs have been in place in each local area since April 2006.
There were over four hundred local representatives at the event from all parts of England and across the sector, including not only LAs but also health, the police, the voluntary sector and others.
The event was well attended by ministers too. Parmjit Dhanda was accompanied by Ivan Lewis from the Department of Health. A video from Baroness Scotland was shown in the morning, and Beverley Hughes gave a powerful keynote address in the afternoon.
Lord Laming chaired the day and gave his own personal message of support, encouragement and challenge to the delegates. His view was that the framework Government has now put in place gives the best ever support for safeguarding so there was a unprecedented opportunity to get this right and make a real difference to the lives of children and young people.
The delegates considered the recommendations of the recent priority review of LSCBs in a series of workshops. They heard about examples of practice and particular safeguarding issues including human trafficking, forced marriage, and safe practice for the children's workforce.
Delegates were pleased to have the opportunity to meet to celebrate progress with LSCBs and to talk through the issues facing them, although of course often challenging Government as to what we can do to further support their work.
