13 May 2009
Ed Balls today announced £3 million – including £1 million for Relate - so organisations can offer more services such as relationship and family counselling to those affected by the recession.

Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls, said:
“It’s really tough for families when the main breadwinner loses their job or they are under threat of repossession and it puts an enormous strain on relationships. We won't repeat the mistakes of the past and leave families to cope alone.”
The money includes includes:
- £1 million for Relate for extra counselling and relationship support for couples and families who may have been affected by the recession – especially in areas hardest hit
- £150,000 for Parentline Plus to increase promotion of their 24 hour helpline
- extra funding to be shared between parenting organisations including NetMums, Dads Space, One Space, Oneplusone/Couple Connection and Contact a Family
- funding for the Kids in the Middle coalition of charities, including Gingerbread and the Fatherhood Institute, which supports children caught in the middle of separation by helping parents understand its impact on them.
