On 24 February 2010, DCSF and DH published Teenage Pregnancy Strategy: Beyond 2010 which sets out what has been achieved so far on the strategy and what we propose to do post-2010 when the current phase of the strategy ends. This has been published to coincide with publication of provisional 2008 under-18 conception data. For more information, read the full press notice.
The Teenage Pregnancy Independent Advisory Group (TPIAG) published its sixth annual report on 15 December 2009. TPIAG welcomes the Government’s adoption of its previous recommendation to make Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education statutory, including Sex and Relationships Education.
A new sexual health media campaign - “Sex. Worth Talking About” - was launched by the Department of Health (DH) and DCSF on 30 November 2009. The campaign, which replaces the current ‘RU Thinking’, ‘Want Respect: Use a Condom’ and ‘Condon Essential Wear’ campaigns, aims to improve knowledge and encourage open communication about relationships and sexual health between parents and their children, young people and professionals, and among young people themselves.
The Government response to the 5th annual report of the Teenage Pregnancy Independent Advisory Group (TPIAG) was published on 11 November 2009. The Government welcomes the recommendations made in TPIAG’s 5th annual report and has taken most of them forward, including making sex and relationship education statutory within Personal, Social, Health and Economic education from 2011, and is investing more than £45 million in improving young people’s awareness and access to effective contraception.

This self assessment toolkit is designed to help local areas monitor and performance manage the implementation of their teenage pregnancy strategies to ensure actions are in line with the key guidance issued by the DCSF and the Department of Health (DH) to local authorities and primary care trusts (PCTs).
