Substance misuse: Treatment
Ensuring that effective specialist treatment is in place for under-18s is a key aspect of the ten-year Drug Strategy. A range of treatment services are now in place for young people in all local authorities in England and waiting times are either low or non-existent.
The focus of the Government is on improving specialist treatment and at the National Treatment Agency (NTA) annual Conference in July 2008, Kevin Brennan MP, Under-Secretary of State for Children, Young People and Families announced the joint Memorandum of Understanding between the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse.
The overall aim of the agreement is to ensure that there are now substantial improvements in the effectiveness, quality and accessibility of young people's specialist substance misuse treatment systems across England.
This should be achieved by better partnership working between local authorities, Children's Trusts, Primary Care Trusts and other local and regional key stakeholders, and through the commissioning and delivery of services within an integrated children's services framework.
Parents
Parental drug misuse can have a significant impact on the well being of dependent children. In order to safeguard children exposed to parental drug use, the DCSF has made parents a priority for drug treatment and is working with the National Treatment Agency to ensure that treatment services are more accessible for parents and families and that they take into account the needs of children.
National Treatment Agency (NTA)
The NTA is a special health authority within the NHS, established by Government in 2001 to improve the availability, capacity and effectiveness of treatment for drug misuse in England.
