Common health issues

This section provides information on Government policy to address the health issues that typically affect children and young people.

Sure Start Children’s Centres are key local players in reducing health risks to children and promoting healthy lifestyles from an early age.

The ‘Accidents and injuries’ section explains the interventions being implemented to increase awareness of the hazards that pre-school children face in everyday life.

Sure Start encourages healthy lifestyles from an early age in order to establish positive patterns of behaviour. The ‘Diet and nutrition’ section provides information and links for parents and Early Years practitioners to help them give children the healthiest start in life. The ‘Physical activity’ section highlights the positive effects of physical activity on academic achievement, behaviour and child obesity.

The ‘Flu pandemic’ section provides information and guidance for dealing with a human flu pandemic in early years settings.

The ten-year drugs strategy and the Youth Alcohol Action Plan aim to reduce drug and alcohol misuse among young people. The ‘Substance misuse’ section sets out the measures being taken by the Government, including local delivery of education, prevention and treatment and enforcement programmes.

The Government aims to reduce the proportion of overweight and obese children to 2000 levels by 2020. The ‘Obesity’ section gives details of the cross-cutting initiative and schemes intended to achieve this, including the Healthy Schools programme and the Food in Schools programme.
