The thinking behind Every Child Matters is not new for many schools. A combination of high expectations, innovative thinking and taking a broad view in supporting children and young people are common features of highly successful schools.
Collaboration both between schools and across agencies is essential to achieving the objectives of the Every Child Matters agenda. Partnerships across public services, including the development of good relationships with other practitioners such as social workers, nurses, GPs and educational psychologists, can lead to improved outcomes in such areas as pupil behaviour, personalised learning, provision for special educational needs (SEN) and reducing the number of children missing education.
Programmes such as the Safer Schools Partnership, in which police are based in schools, take a joined-up approach to crime prevention, school safety, behaviour improvement and educational achievement. Equally important is the establishment of joined-up working practices between schools and other education and training providers, such as the provision of lifelong learning as part of the extended schools programme, as well as higher and further education institutions and employers.
