Department for Children, Schools and Families
Sustainable Development

What the Department is doing

The Government wants to be a leading model of sustainable development.

It encourages the public sector to promote and deliver sustainable development in all its policies and operations.

The Department is working towards sustainability in its use of energy and water, its purchase of goods and services, its waste generation and the way its staff travel to work.

It is developing policies and programmes for children, schools and families that promote and support sustainability, and is working with government as a whole to make our nation a world-class leader in skills by 2020.

The Department’s first Sustainable Development Action Plan (SDAP) was launched in September 2003. The achievements and lessons learnt were built into another SDAP in 2006. A review of this plan forms an Annex to the Department's new wider-reaching SDAP 2008.
