Young Apprenticeships

Young Apprenticeships (YA) gives motivated 14-16 year old pupils the opportunity to pursue industry- specific applied learning programmes alongside the National Curriculum.

Learners attend courses for 2 days a week (or equivalent) over two years of the programme, which includes undertaking 50 days work experience. The programme has been expanding since it began in September 2004 with 1,000 pupils.

A fifth cohort of over 9,000 joined the YA programme in September 2008. We are running small scale pilots of YAs with Diplomas as the underpinning qualifications in some sectors alongside cohort five.

From September 2009 a sixth cohort of around 9,000 places will be available with the expansion of YA with Diplomas pilots. Plans for the Young Apprenticeship programme are following a course of mainstreaming and convergence with the wider 14-19 curriculum offer.

This moves in the direction of giving Local Authorities full accountability for commissioning the full range of 14-19 learning opportunities - GCSEs, A Levels, Apprenticeships and Diplomas
