Qualifications and curriculum
The Government aims to create a system of qualifications for 14 to 19-year-olds which provides a choice of routes, all of which lead to valuable qualifications and progression to further learning. The new system will provide for different learning preferences and will help motivate all young people to participate and achieve.
The Diploma, developed by schools, colleges, universities and employers, is central to this aim. It offers different ways of learning and enables progression into higher education and skilled employment.
Key changes are:
- changes to A Levels to reduce the burden of assessment and introduce ‘stretch and challenge';
- revised GCSEs with content that is up-to-date and includes controlled assessment in most subjects, and for lower attainers, a foundation learning tier to provide a platform for higher achievement;
- a requirement that all young people, whichever learning route they take, will study the English, mathematics and ICT needed to succeed in life and employment. These functional skills will be incorporated in GCSE English and mathematics and in Diplomas;
- a range of personal, learning and thinking skills that young people will develop, and can apply in work related contexts;
- changes to the secondary curriculum that will provide more time to focus on the basics for those who need to, as well as to provide extra challenges for those who are more capable.
