One of the most significant developments for employers is the introduction of Functional Skills in all 14–19 qualification routes. This will ensure that young people achieve good standards of maths, English and ICT.
The new Diploma, devised with input from business, bridges the divide between academic and vocational studies. It offers practical as well as theoretical learning, work experience and whole-sector insight. The courses will also develop personal skills such as communication, presentation and teamwork.
Apprenticeships will continue to be a competitive and versatile way to train for work, and for some will be the next step after a Diploma.
Benefits to employers won’t only come from the availability of 17 Diploma subjects. The reforms in teaching and assessment methods will make GCSEs and A levels more versatile, and will enable young people to develop stronger employability skills.
We’re equipping future generations for the rigours of the rapidly changing marketplace.
